‘Transparent Wishes’ is the current painting style I’m really engaged with, harnessing both concept and practice to create a flow of energy. The concept for this is intricately thought out, meaning every element holds a purpose. The actual meaning is private (at this time) but is about identity, fertility and time. These themes are poignant in my art and this was one of the first pieces that combined object history, meaning and content into one.
I was first inspired to make this painting after finishing the book ‘Men Without Women’ by Haruki Murakami; this book meant so much to me and elements of the title fuelled the production of the piece. I was also inspired by Thom A Minnick’s texture and colour rich images, which you can in the vibrant reds, green and contrasting subtle grey and cream background. The harsh light was captured by bending a piece of card to create an infinity background, with a lamp posed at an angle to expose the shadows and give them more prominence, which is part of the time element of this piece.
I love this piece, one of my favourites I have ever made and holds such significant meaning. I am very proud of it.
