Kitty V Birch is an artist, photographer and graphic designer based in North Yorkshire, UK
I studied Fine Art at Leeds Arts University in 2020, however, due to covid restrictions, I “dropped out” to pursue art unrestricted. Historically, I am trained in Fine Art painting, creating precise and highly detailed images with their focus on important issues like identity, family history and mentality. After exhibiting my piece ‘Static’ (2019) at The Mercer Open exhibition in Harrogate in 2022, and a trip to Paris in 2023, my creative direction evolved into looser drawing and film photography.
I found solace in the ability to practice drawing and mark making more freely and experiment with styles, previously limited by hyper-realistic painting. This freedom has fundamentally changed my style and interests, finding peace in the mundane and beauty in the everyday. My current work is a variety of landscapes, dining scenes, people and architecture. This phase of creating is still evolving, with oil pastel and bolder concepts seeping into the foundations of my work.
This step into the natural world has also inspired a more varied approach to material in my work; often swapping my sketchbook for cardboard and canvases for discarded letters. Sustainability and re-purposing old discarded materials holds value in their own unique history and raises questions on issues regarding waste and society deems as valuable or pretty. My current direction will continue to develop my critical understanding of purpose and identity explored through the history of objects and discarded material, using bolder media including oil pastel and ink to juxtapose the order and structures of different materials.
My aim for this portfolio is to share my evolving work with others as I explore art my freely in my mid-twenties. I hope that as my work progresses into finer styles, this website will expand into a wider range of materials and have a clearer focus and coherent style. If you’d like to hear more about any specific pieces, drop me a line and I’d love to have a chat. Also, if there are any images you’d like to purchase as a print or other formats, also contact me to discuss sizes, prices and paper types.
